(1) LIBRARY DEPARTMENT: A PROFILE

The Vivekanand Pustakalaya was established in the year 2005 in tune with the objectives of Pt. Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University. The Library is the most helpful information center in distance mode education by Pt. Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University in Chhattisgarh State. The Vivekananda Library is located in University Campus. PSSOU is recognized as the only open university in Chhattisgarh. It has a vast collection of books, journals and periodicals, CDs self-learning materials and other related study materials in the field of Distance Education.Students can use the library for reading, referencing and borrowing. The Library membership is made available to students, research scholars, faculty (current and retired) of PSSOU.

The Vivekanand Library coordinates the effective functioning and development of RCs (Regional Centers) and SCs (Study Centers). The Library caters to the needs of the academic, administrative, supportive staff and students at PSSOU. The Library has been using SOUL 3.0 software, an integrated Library Management interface forquick access to library resources. Users can search the Online Library Catalogue by author, title, subject, and keywords. The Vivekanand Library is operational towards providing learners with remote and easy access to the library and it continues to make strides in user-friendly technologies.

About distance learning study material:

The collection of various course books related to distance learning program of various open universities of India are present in the library of the university like the Indira Gandhi national open university (IGNOU) New Delhi, Bhoj open university Bhopal Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon open university Prayagraj, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar open university (BAOU) Ahmedabad Gujarat, Vardhman Mahaveer open university (VMOU) Kota Rajasthan and Pandit Sundarlal Sharma open university Bilaspur Chhattisgarh.

Vivekananda pustakalaya has more than 15029 books and the library has also taken subscriptions of various national and international journals. There are many reading rooms in the library and there is a seating arrangement for 50-50 readers in each reading room. The university is a member of online developing library networking (DELNET).

(3) Objective, Mission & Vision of the Library Department, PSSOU:

Objective

• To develop collections both printed and electronic on various disciplines for satisfying the needs of the diverse users.
• To provide reading, lending, reference, information and documentation facilities to all categories of Learners, Academicians, Officials, Various personnel of PSSOU.
• To cater need based services to the learners of ODL situation.
• To provide comprehensive reference/information services to the users.
• To reach almost all learners and users of NSOU community scattered in all over West Bengal with the help of ICT.
• To provide personalized service to those who are in special need.

Mission

• To provide reading, lending, reference, information and documentation facilities to all categories of Learners, Academicians, Officials, Various personnel of Pt. Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University (PSSOU).
• To support Educational and Research Program offered by PSSOU.
• To develop the institutional repository.
• To develop collections both printed and electronic on various disciplines for satisfying the needs of the diverse users.

Vision

• The PSSOU University Library aspires to create the most dynamic learning environment providing the seamless access to ever-growing knowledge and information by using cutting edge technologies to promote higher learning, innovative research and striving to preserve the rich culture and heritage of the land both in print and in digital form.
• The University Library serves the information needs of distance education students, faculty, and staff and also coordinates to ensure adequate access to Library resources for those who enroll in PSSOU programs. WEBOPAC is provided to search the Library Resources.

Library Hour: 10:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M., from Monday to Saturday.

Text books, monographs, handbooks on various subjects such as English Literature, English Language, Linguistics, History, Geography, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Work, Library and Information Science, Research Methodology, Commerce, Management, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology, Mathematics, Computer Science etc. Dissertations. Selected PH. D thesis/dissertations. Journals on various subjects. Reference books, such as, encyclopedias, handbooks, yearbooks, biographies, both language and subject dictionaries etc. Large number of collections of various Bengali and English writers such as novelist, poets, drama writers etc. are procured in the Library. Various Government as well as other reports are procured in the Library.
